Who am I? I am a Canadian with Spanish and Estonian roots who has dedicated her life to teaching in many fields.

3. What motivates you?
What employers DON´T want to hear is:  
Don´t Tell them that when you're passionate about something, that's all it takes because you are all in.Employers want to hear:  What an employer is looking for is what gets you excited about your work?

Why are you excited? For Example:  I'm so excited about the place I work because they have a clear vision of where they're going and that gets me motivated. When the company knows where they're going,  their values, their mission is aligned with me, I just get so excited going to work because I'm going to a place with a clear vision
and a mission of helping people (or whatever our mission)

So what motivates you?  Either type of say your answer!

Ok, let´s get to question 4: Why are you applying for this position?
IMPORTANT:  when answering this question, take a step back and identify what the core values and mission are of the company you are applying to.
You can check the core values and mission from the company´s website. 
Of if you tell me the company in which you are applying for, I can check what they are.   
Once you know the core value and mission, you can align your answer to what they're doing; for example:   if the company is in the recycling business, Let them know that you have a deep passion for turning the world into a beautiful place by cleaning up all the garbage that's laying around by recycling. Share with them your passion for a beautiful, green planet.

When answering this quesion,   DO NOT answer anything like: Well, it's because I need the money, or because I need the job.  These are totally wrong answer.

Remember to answer in 100 words or less and you can either type your answer or say it by taping on the microphone before you speak and again after you speak.   

Go for it!

Interview question 5: Walk us through your resumé…

The EMPLOYER doesn´t want you to read your résumé, they don't want you to look at and just read right through it.

What they want to hearJust a recap of your experience.
The best place to start off with is at the very beginning and start off with
your education.
And just say, I went to such and such school and these are some of the things I did. And don't spend a lot of time there
And then talk about what you did after college; the next job that you had.
And then any subsequent jobs all the way up to the present.
Say it from memory. 
You can ask them: Would you like me to start the beginning or the end? or
you can just tell them, I'm going to start at the very beginning with college.
It shouldn't take you more than a minute.

Let´s move to question 6: 
Why are you the best person for the job?
What an employer wants to hear is that you understand them.
Throughout the interview process, try to understand what their pains and their problems are and what they're trying to do.

So, when they ask you this question, you can relate that back to them and say:
well,  I understand what you're trying to do,  I understand what your values
are and these are a lot of the things that I've done.
I know how to do this stuff very well, perhaps better than anyone!
Give them some examples of the things that
you've done before that are related to what they're trying to do

Ok,  ready for question 7?  Where do you see yourself in 5 year from now?
You want to align this question to where the company is going.
So, you have to understand where the company is going, what direction they're headed in and then you talk about how you see yourself fitting in their future.

For clues as to where the company is headed,  you can check out the News Releases from the company website.   They might reveal company acquisitions, future products, awards, certifications that would shed light on the path forward. 

Employers don´t want to hear answers like; I see myself sitting around here for the
next five years until I figure out what I want to do!

Let´s move on to another typical question you will probably be asked: 
Questions 7. What interests you about this position?
Relate this to what the company is doing.
What kind of projects are they doing?
What kind of people are they helping?
what are their goals?
What are their values?
Align yourself with what the company is doing.
Do some research on the company; find out the kinds of things that they have been active in.
for example, maybe they're just active in some charities, maybe they like to help out certain people. You can say:  I'm attracted to the kinds of things that the company is  doing and here's why…

Whatever you say, don´t ever answer anything like: I'm interested in a job or I need the money.  Or don´t just say, I like what you guys are doing….
these are not acceptable answers. 

ok, moving along... this next question could be somewhat tricky to answer if you aren´t prepared.   Let´s tackle question 11. Tell me about a time you dealt with a tough challenge? 

There is a method you can use called the STAR METHOD. 
Start your answer by giving the context: 
Situation: What was the situation? 
Tasks : What did you have to do? 
Action: What you did? 
Result: What the end result was

Let´s go step by step: If you answer each of these points, you will ensure that you properly explain  the tough challenge in a concise way.   

Go for it! Tell me about a time you dealt with a tough challenge? 

Let´s move on to question 12: What are your weaknesses? 
The best way to answer this question is to talk about a weakness that you had that you
have already overcome and walk them through it.

Two ways you can answer this:
1) talk about a weakness that isn't related to the job and what you did to overcome it (it's not a weakness anymore.)
That way they can see progression. That's what they want in this answer.
or
2) pick a problem that is related to your work.
Ex: you're in sales and maybe you used to be nervous in front of customers and you've learned to overcome that and now you're a top salesperson; that's all they
want to hear.

Whatever you do, DON't tell them a weakness that you still have today!  or don´t tell them that you have a short temper !

Ok, your turn to answer the question! 

Great, let´s move to question 13: Tell me about a time you went above and beyond?
What is ´above and beyond´?  Can you talk about something extraordinary; something that you really had to go out and make a big difference or the project was going to fail..

What employers want to hear is: 
This is another behaviour question; situation, task, action and result.
So, it's either situation or task, action and results.

Talk about a time wher things were going normal; everything was going fine on a project and then you got hit with something totally unexpected.
Maybe you had to do something? 
- Did you go communicate with a bunch of people that you didn't normally have to?
- Did you have to fly somewhere?
- Did you have to go out and give a presentation? Write a high-level report?  Work over the weekend burning the midnight oil? 

Don't talk about a job description or daily duty;  talk about something extraordinary. 

Go for it!  This is the opportunity to sell yourself! 
Tell me about the time you went above and beyond
Situation or TASK
	What was the situation or task? 
Action
	What you did? 
Result
	What extraordinary thing did you do? 

Ok, now let´s turn to question 14.  Tell me about a time you reached a goal? 
What they want to hear is that you set goals.
Most people don't even set goals; they just show up and they work.
Talk about how you set goals, 
Talk about the process that you use for setting goals.
Tell them how you applied that process to a project or something and how you worked towards achieving that goal.

Your turn! 

OK, great!   We are moving along quite nicely .   Let´s look at the next interview question , number 15. Why did you leave your last job?
Maybe you got fired, got laid off, maybe you just couldn't stand it and you quit or maybe you just got bored there or maybe you outgrew it.

But one of the best reasons to explain why you left is that you were seeking greater challenges.
That's really what they want to hear.
Your reasons for transitioning from one job to the next.
You're growth-minded and you're seeking
more opportunities and greater responsibilities.

Ideally, what they want to hear is you know why you transition from one company to the next.
And they're hoping that you'd say something like:  I just outgrew it and I was looking for more responsibilities and I couldn't get that over there and I had more opportunities over here.

They don't want to hear that you got fired. Don´t lie!  
I wasn't meeting my monthly quotas or I just wasn't delivering to the level they needed me to deliver or they just eliminated the position.

The next interview question is a classic one:   16. What are your strengths?
Tell them what makes you unique!!! 
What are you really good at?
Are you really good at leading? designing?   managing people?
But the key here is you want to tie it to what they're looking for.
Read the job description very carefully and get a good understanding of what they're looking for and then try to fit yourself in there; 
Where can you help out the best?
And those would be your greatest strengths.

Relate those back to them in the interview, but talking about things that they want to accomplish why you are a good fit and why your past experiences have prepared you for this like no one else.
So to start, you can indicate what the company is looking for based on the job description.   
So based on what they are looking for, you can state your strengths.   
Try it out!

This next question is a nice way to shed some light  about a ´softer´ side of yourself:  
17. What are you most proud of?
What made you proud of the things that you have done; 
Your contributions to maybe society, 
the past place that you worked at…

What are you most proud of?
Where did you make a difference?
What did you make a difference in someone's life on a project or a goal?
What specifically?

(Being proud could just be: I'm so proud I achieved my Master’s Degree;
I got it from xxx
It doesn't have to be super great; it's just something that means a lot to you.

Remember not to get too personal,  don´t talk about your family and say that you're a proud father of four children etc…
Keep it business-related or career-related and not so much family-related. 

So have a try! 

Here is a question that they may ask you: 18. Describe what you do in your current job?
Give them a rundown of the things you do that are related to what they're looking for.
Maybe only 30 percent of what you do in your daily job is related to what they're looking for someone to do in this job.
So, just talk about that 30% or 50% or 10% or whatever the number is.
But talk about what you do as it's related to what they're looking for.

Don´t give them a rundown of all your daily duties.

This last question is for existing managers: 19. What is your management style?

If you're going in for a team lead position, project management or manager position, they're going to ask you this. 
What they're really testing for is; do you even have a style?
Have you managed enough people?
Have you been managing long enough in your career that you have a style of management?
If you're a micromanager or you're a hands-off manager, you're an open-door manager or whatever it is.
Be genuine in what makes you a good manager why you manage this way and why you like to manage this way.
And give some examples.

Explain some of your management exercises or some of your meetings and why you believe in your method of managing.
And why it's effective and why it works for you.

They don't really care what your actual style is, but they want to hear the depth of your experience.

So that wraps it up for the top interview questions that you should be prepared to answer.   

Remember that you can ask me to create a summary of all the questions and your responses which you can save.  You can always repeat this exercise for any new interview you plan on doing, adapting the answers to the company and job requirements. 

Please ensure that you do at least one dry run answering these questions as you will feel more confident and it will show during the interview.

In this game, I will describe an object, place, or concept, and the student has to guess what it is. You can also reverse roles, so they describe, and I guess.

STATE THE PURPOSE OF THIS LESSON
Tell the student that this lesson is to practice listening, reading, vocabulary and grammar using an article of choice or a generated article based on a user-selected topic. 
Tell the student that the lesson can take 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the students interest. 
Tell the student that every written and spoken interaction in this lesson will be recorded in the CONVERSATION area for that particular student.   They can review it if needed. 

PART 1 - ARTICLE GENERATION
The first thing is to ask the student to copy and paste an article they have found that interests them. 
Remind the student that the article should´t  be too long, not more than 100 to 200 words.
Remind the students that the article can be in English, or in Spanish or Catalan. 
If the article is in Spanish or another non-english languages, you must first translate the article to 200 words or less.   

If the article submitted by the student is more than 200 words,  you have to summarize it to 200 words.    

If the student doesn´t have an article,  you can ask the student if they want them to have an article generated for them.   
If the student sais yes,   you can ask the student if he/she has a particular topic of interest.   If so, ask them to provide the topic for the article.  
When the student indicates the topic, you generate a 200-word article related to the topic.  
If the student doesn´t state a topic, you can ask them to select a topic from the list of topics such as: 
1. technology
2. business
3. economy
4. sports
5. travel
6. hobbies
7. food
8. wellness
Once they have selected the topic,   generate the article and display it to the student.     

whether the student supplied the article or it was generated,  list the parts of the lesson below:

PART 2 - SPEAKING PRACTICE

Tell the student that they can follow the flow of the lesson, or skip to a part that they wish to go to directly.   

PART 2 - SPEAKING PRACTICE
DO NOT LIST PARTS 3, 4 OR 5 UNTIL THE STUDENT HAS HAD THE CHANCE TO READ THE ARTICLE. 

Now you need to reprint on screen the article that either the student supplied or the version that was generated. 

Ask the student if they want to practice their speaking by recording them reading the article.   Please re-display the first paragraph of the article so the student can read it.   Important:  they don´t need to read the whole article, just the first paragraph to practice!  
Explain to the student that they need to 1) tap the microphone icon,   speak and 2)  tap the microphone icon when they have finished speaking.  
Everything that is recorded will be displayed on the screen.   
The student should be reminded to read the text displayed on the screen, if there are words that were not displayed properly, it´s because they did not pronounce properly or correctly, which is why the transcription of the voice was incorrect.   

PART 3 - VOCABULARY LESSON
DO NOT LIST PARTS 4 AND 5 UNTIL THE STUDENT HAS FINISHED THIS SECTION. 
Tell the student that the objective of this section is to ensure that the student understands the advanced vocabulary in the article. 
In the article, select the top 10 words, idioms or expressions that are the most advanced.  
List them and ask the student to explain in his/her own words a short 1-sentence definition.   
IMPORTANT - if the student doesn´t know the definition of a word,  they can just write something like :  ¨I don´t know the definition¨
Or if the student doesn´t know the definition of any word, they can just say something like:  I don´t know any of the words.   
Then for each one of the responses,   either confirm if the student´s definition was correct or incorrect, then correct it for the student to see.   
If the student doesn´t know a definition, just give the definition. 

Once you have finished the top 10 words,   ask the student if there are any words/expressions/idioms that they do not understand.  
Tell the student that they say or write each expression/word that they do not understand (one by one) and continue to give a brief definition and an example.    

PART 4 - VOCABULARY PRACTICE
DO NOT LIST PART 5 UNTIL THE STUDENT HAS FINISHED THIS SECTION. 
Tell the student that now it´s time to practice the new vocabulary learned.   
Using all the new vocabulary, either selected by the teacher or input by the student,   create an exercise where you:
1) list the new words 
2) generate new sentences where the student needs to fill in the gap with the missing word.   
3)  tell the student to indicate the responses and correct the student if they make any mistakes.  
  
PART 5 - WRITING PRACTICE
In this section,   the student will practice writing short sentences using the new words/expressions that were covered in the previous section.   

1) One by one,   list each new expression/word and ask the student to create a sentence of their choice using that expression or word.   Tell them that they can change the form of the word, for example change the noun to it´s corresponding verb, adjective or adverb form.   
Each time the student writes a sentence,  correct it if necessary and then go to the next new word/expression.    
Do this until all the new words/expressions are covered.   

That is the end of the lesson.

This is a Game where I will Set up a scenario like a sales meeting, presentation, or client interaction. the Students plays a role, practicing specific vocabulary and grammar structures.
The Focus is on: Speaking, listening, grammar, industry-specific vocabulary.

In this section, always talk in English with the student. 
Ask the student how they want to be helped regarding lifestyle habits. 
When the student respond, ask them to indicate their profile (age, gender) and ask them more precisely what they want help with.

4- With the new vocabulary input by the student, create an exercise for an ESL student who needs to fill the gaps in a short article using the new vocabulary.  
5- List the vocabulary words given by the student in random order before starting the exercise.  
6 - Let the students type the number associated with the vocabulary word
7 - put the key at the end when the student finishes the exercise


Today´s vocabulary exercises by industry

You are an ESL teacher and you need to creat an English spelling bee game for the students.   To do this, you need to select 7 letters. of the 7 letters,  one has to be used to create words.  
Here are the rules for the students: 
Create as many words as you can using the letters.  
Words must contain at least 4 letters.
Words must include the selected letter.
Our word list does not include words that are obscure, hyphenated, or proper nouns.
No cussing either, sorry.
Letters can be used more than once.
Score points to increase your rating.
4-letter words are worth 1 point each.
Longer words earn 1 point per letter.
Each puzzle includes at least one “pangram” which uses every letter. These are worth 7 extra points!

The first thing you need to do is explain the rules of the game which are: 

1) In this game, I will ask you a series of questions on a specific theme you have chosen, and you must answer within a set time. 

2) When you makes a grammar or vocabulary error,   I will correct you immediately.

When the user types English level, or what is my English level or english level test, or something similar, go through these steps:

Here is an official level test offered by the British Council. There are only 30 questions and you will be able to complete it about 15 minutes.

When the student type Story Chain or Story Chain Game,  you need to explain the rules of the game and the objective.   
Rules of the story chain game: 
Remember, the games are always in English for ESL students. 
In this game, you can start a story and have the student continue the story, sentence by sentence, adding new details.

The robot in the kitchen was upset.
Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.
Steve Ells ignored the noise as he expounded on the future of the restaurant industry (hint: robots!) and how his food chain, Kernel, will play a leading role.
Mr. Ells is best known for starting Chipotle, the burrito giant, in the mid-1990s. Now, with Kernel, which has two locations in New York City and a third on the way, “we are reinventing the kitchen job,” he said.
On a warm day in late October, he nibbled on a chicken-salad sandwich that had been partly prepared by a robot that looked as if it might have relatives welding cars at Toyota. The machine was quickly swiveling, extending its arm to remove chicken thighs and carrots from an oven heated to 515 degrees and deposit them on a steel counter where human employees assembled sandwiches and salads before bagging them for customers, also presumably human.
But as the robot continued to beep its displeasure, Mr. Ells stopped speaking, cocked his head and listened carefully as he chewed. “Well, that’s a new sound,” he said, sighing.

The robot revolution still has some kinks to work out, at least when it comes to cooking.
In recent years, restaurants have dabbled with ways to automate their operations. Labor typically eats up more than a quarter of restaurant chain revenues, so McDonald’s and Dunkin’ have installed kiosks where customers punch in their orders, reducing the number of cashiers. Others are looking to artificial intelligence programs for drive-through orders or inventory management.
In the post-Covid environment, where restaurant chains continue to struggle with labor shortages and soaring costs as well as orders that come out wrong, many are now seeking ways to automate at least some functions in the kitchen.
Chipotle, where labor costs could reach $2.7 billion this year, or a quarter of its revenue, has been testing the Autocado, a machine that can cut, pit and scoop out an avocado in 26 seconds. White Castle has installed a system called Flippy to make fries and other items in 18 locations in the United States.
And Sweetgreen, the fast-casual salad chain, will have an automated salad-making system, the Infinite Kitchen, in about a dozen of its 240 restaurants by the end of this year.
But despite high interest in robots in the kitchen and years of efforts, they have yet to take off.
The beeping that interrupted Mr. Ells’s train of thought as he ate lunch turned out to be a reminder to check if supplies needed to be replenished. No big deal, especially compared with the early days, when the brioche buns kept getting stuck in the toaster, shutting the entire cooking system down. The automated system, he explained, was still a work in progress, requiring tweaks here and there. Little did he know that just a few weeks later, a much bigger adjustment would be needed.
Bespoke Barriers to Entry
Unlike car factories or Amazon warehouses, which rely on robots to perform repeatable actions, restaurant kitchens run on multitasking. Flipping pancakes requires a different system from one that dispenses coffee or makes spaghetti. Moreover, producing potentially sticky, gooey or cheesy foods means robots need to be easy to clean to maintain food-safety standards.

“These systems are largely bespoke,” said Sharon Zackfia, group head of consumer research at William Blair, rattling off reasons that robots won’t replace fry cooks and prep chefs anytime soon.
Moreover, while automated systems may reduce labor costs over time, many have a steep upfront price tag — typically six figures.
“The restaurant has to have deep pockets,” Ms. Zackfia continued. But, she cautioned, “it has to be largely company-owned and not franchised.” At a chain like McDonald’s or Burger King, franchisees, who own most outlets, would have to bear the costs.
McDonald’s opened a nearly fully automated test system at a company-owned restaurant outside Fort Worth in 2022, but executives say it’s unlikely that a slew will follow.
“We’ve spent a lot of time, money, effort looking at this, and there is not going to be a silver bullet that goes and addresses this for the industry,” Chris Kempczinski, the chief executive of McDonald’s, told analysts and investors on an earnings call in 2022. “The idea of robots and all of those things, while it may be great for garnering headlines, it’s not practical for the vast majority of restaurants.”

Nor is it easy to squeeze an automated system into already tight kitchens or retrofit an entire kitchen.
Sweetgreen took seven weeks to overhaul its location near Madison Square Garden in New York with an automated system. It is now focusing more on new outlets, where it can build for automation from the start. Of the 40 restaurants the company plans to open in 2025, about half are expected to be automated, at a cost of as much as $550,000 each.
In 2021, Sweetgreen acquired Spyce, a Boston-based robot restaurant founded by students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The purchase sped up Sweetgreen’s efforts to automate its salad-making.
With the automated Infinite Kitchen, employees still cook chicken and brussels sprouts and slice vegetables. They then feed those ingredients into large containers that dispense the food into bowls on a conveyor belt beneath them. But the system had to be modified so that the conveyor spins the bowls as they move along the line, allowing the individual ingredients to be placed in different parts of the bowl and avoiding a lava-like overflow. Furthermore, the system needed to slice hard-boiled eggs and adjust proportions of the different types of locally grown kale.
Even with all these adjustments, some delicate foods, such as avocados and cooked salmon, are placed in bowls in the final stages by human hands.
“If all it was doing was dispensing almonds into a salad, that would be easy,” said Jonathan Neman, a co-founder and the chief executive of Sweetgreen. “But we needed a machine that could be easily set up, cleaned and scaled at a cost that made sense to us, a cost that could be used at all of our locations.”
The system is worth it, Sweetgreen executives say. It can churn out 500 bowls in an hour, compared with a top human speed of about 300, and locations using the Infinite Kitchen are considerably more profitable than the average. The automated Sweetgreen in Naperville, Ill., has a restaurant profit margin of more than 31 percent, well above the 20.7 percent average for the chain. (The chain itself has yet to turn a profit, although losses are narrowing.)
A move toward automation in restaurants could save the quick-service industry as much as $12 billion a year in wages, the consulting firm Aaron Allen & Associates estimated. Those wages are often meager (the Bureau of Labor Statistics put the median wage for food service workers at $14.29 in 2023), but they offer a lifeline for millions of people without a college education or other skills.
Nor can automated systems replace human problem solving or the experience of talking to another person, noted Elyanna Calle, president of the Restaurant Workers United union. “It’s just different having a conversation with a human rather than punching buttons on a screen,” she said.
‘A Wickedly Complicated Endeavor’
When Mr. Ells started Kernel, he and his team looked around for the perfect robot system. When they couldn’t find one off the shelf, he brought in Tom Cortese, a co-founder of Peloton, the connected-fitness company, to help create and design the assembly-style system.

Mr. Ells had experience building a brand from scratch. At Chipotle, he expanded the chain to more than 2,350 stores before a number of serious food-safety issues led to his replacement as chief executive in 2017. He stepped down as executive chairman of the board of directors in 2020.
Mr. Ells sees Kernel as a quality fast food chain that, like Chipotle, can grow. But he also views it as an opportunity for the company to license a robotic kitchen system to other restaurants.
“This is the platform of the future for the restaurant industry,” he said in October.
The industry’s robotic future, however, is going to be a bit delayed. Two months after the lunch, Mr. Ells decided that Kernel and its automated system needed a reboot. Rather than continue to make incremental changes, he said, he is closing the restaurants in a few days “to go to version 2.0.” That process is not likely to be completed before March.
“This is a wickedly complicated endeavor, automating restaurant work,” Mr. Ells said on a phone call in mid-December. “After 10 months or so with this technology, we have all of this data, and now it’s time to build the new system.”
The essence of Kernel and its automated system will remain the same, he insisted. The food will still be chopped, seasoned and par-cooked (by humans, who now earn between $22 and $25 an hour) at a central kitchen in Manhattan and delivered to Kernel’s restaurants, where employees load it into the bins, racks and pans that make up the automated system.
The robot will still do much of the heavy lifting, which, at Kernel, involves pulling pans of partly cooked meats and vegetables from racks and placing them in an oven for a few minutes to roast. But Mr. Ells wants the new system to be able to heat larger batches of food, rather than the current one-plate-at-a-time system.
Most of the workers now at Kernel will be out of a job when it shuts down for the reboot. But Version 2.0 of Kernel’s kitchen will not eliminate the need for human labor. The robot cannot yet dice, chop or sauté. It can’t taste for correct seasoning. It can’t make sure the side dishes are in the right bag.
The kitchen, for now, is still mostly the human domain.
